Marcus never knew his mother and father. For whatever reason, he was placed at the doors of a Monastery, where brother and sister monks that worshipped Angels resided. The order was a sanctuary for those seeking refuge, no matter what the issue, they took the recently born infant, cleaned him and raised him among their order as their ward. Being a monk, he actively trained in self defense in the event of an attack from dark forces, but also taught humility and faith in the angels to show all of Yalanze the Light. From an early age, Marcus displayed a higher capacity for good than any of the other Monks. From his own inner being, they sensed a powerful light from within his soul. He had an uncanny ability to comfort the grieving, or ease the emotional pain of others with a whisper. Many of the other monks would have believed him to be an angel, were it not that they brought him up from an infant.



Things had always been simple amongst the Order. The monks lived helping the wayward travelers, and offering refuge to the helpless. Marcus was a gardener in his younger years as a monk, and when the plants began to die without warning one day, he knew that something was amiss. A traveler came to the monastery one day, and slowly began to exert a dark influence, the likes of which Marcus had never seen. The traveler called himself MacNair, and quickly revealed his dark nature to Marcus when he began to dispatch a monk a day, and through each kill, his influence over the other monks grew, to where they would not listen to their brother monk’s pleas of reason against this dark force, however obvious the offense. When MacNair had gained enough influence to crush each monk’s faith, he moved towards the last: Marcus. However strong his influence, MacNair could not seem to break the Monk. Even when the monastery around Marcus had become personal hell concocted by MacNair’s imagination, Marcus held on to his faith, and within time, MacNair left, setting the monastery ablaze with the clearly crippled Marcus barely escaping his death.



As soon as he could get his strength, Marcus traveled Yalanze searching for the demon. From time to time, he had gotten word that the demon was in other realms, but often returned to Yalanze. Even so, as the years went by he was left pondering his own faith. The damage that MacNair left was a mixture of physical and mental, and as Marcus traveled, he found whispers of MacNair’s torment upon the world. Eventually, he learned that MacNair was back in Yalanze, serving as one of Vlad’s many lieutenants in the Undead/Draconic War. When Mythregal allied with the dragon king, Samael, Marcus was quick to join up. Through the first part of the war, he acted as one of the many soldiers in Asher’s legendary purges among Mythregal. People, who were “suspected” of being loyalists to Sylthanis, were dragged out into the streets and promptly executed without trial. The blood count was high, and the guilt was even thicker than the blood that drenched up to his knees, when Marcus learned of Asher’s own loyalty to the Dead Wood. The people that had been killed in these purges were innocent more than they were guilty. People, who Asher saw as threats to Vlad’s total control over Mythregal, when he gained the control of the portals.



Marcus spent the rest of the war contemplating suicide. His path for revenge in hunting for the demon, MacNair, lead him ultimately to a path of innocent bloodshed. For personal penances, he volunteered for the front lines whenever possible. As fate would have it, he would find MacNair in the final battle, when Mythregal was lead in the final defense against Vlad’s armies to the lands of Mythregal. The demon followed league with the rest of the undead, and at long last, Marcus fought against the demon after years of hunting him. The demon managed to nearly outmatch Marcus with almost every blow, until the end, when Marcus knew his faith was what kept the demon from killing him. At that moment, Marcus took back a portion of his faith, and defeat MacNair, stabbing the demon in the heart and leaving him to be devoured by the Lich as the battle came towards its end.



Although his faith saved him in battle, killing MacNair did not bring Marcus peace. His revenge was enacted, but before he died, MacNair managed to remind Marcus that their blood would always be on the former monk’s hands. This thought alone drove the Monk to a cliff, ready to leap off, when he was stopped by the Archangel, Sariel. Moved by the former monk’s bravery, she offered him another way. A place, where he can pay penance for his past, and serve a greater purpose, and to earn his rightful place in Paradise in the end. Through Sariel’s grace, Marcus endured the Trials of the Paladins, and took Sariel’s Blessing to become a Paladin.
