The death of Christopher Ryen (Merry)

Chris stood pacing back and forth just a few feet from the portals taking in all the energy it would give him. He would need every bit of it. He wore a black suit with his jet black hair just right. Some people could see him others could not. He didn't care. Only one person needed to see him. She was due here for work anytime now.

Chris and Merry had grown so close in the last year. The love he had for her he could not even try to put in words. They even remember thier time together when Chris was not a ghost but a prince. And she was his bride to be. She had traveled to his realm long ago. Forever joining thier paths.

Now he would secure their future together. He was a ghost and already dead but he did not care. He did not need this life only her. His had his hand in his pocket holding the small ring box. That was why he had to do this at the portals. Without them he could not hold anything.

He spotted her walking towards him. He could see the Ora of power around her. She was so beautiful. The worse was all his focus was holding the ring in his pocket so he could not kiss her. His lips would go right through hers. "There is my princess." He said with a smile. "Hope you don't mind me showing up at your work like this. After all I needed to recharge. So I can holding something."

She didn't know why he had called her to here of all places. She spent most of her time around the portals and the idea that she would show up here on her time off was a bit odd but Chris had insisted and she figured it wouldn't hurt. She wore a pink gown, heels and rose headband that kept her curls in check so they didn't run riot. It would be bad enough that the energy of the portal would give them an extra bounce for some reason without them obscuring her vision in the process.

"So what was so important, Chris?" she asked softly with a chuckle, "It has been a very long time since anyone called me that. You know I don't put on aires about such things." she said softly as she blushed at his words. Anything he had planned confused her. She couldn't think of anything he or she would need.

The energies around the portal were swirling like a vortex and she stood to the side of it not wishing to get hit by anything leaving it on accident. You never knew what would happen to people when they got too close. She herself was proof of that. She wondered why her hair hadn't gone white with the energy that regularly coursed through her as easily as breathing. It worried her. She also noticed she wasn't aging. Others had grown older if they were mortal but she had remained unchanged and even if she was a witch there should have been some sign. The whitening of her hair, the faintest of wrinkles and yet none of it had touched her.

It frightened her as she stood there in the clearing near the portal. "You don't have to give me things, Chris. I know you care." she said with a shy smile as she looked up at him with her brown eyes. She folded her hands in front of herself for lack of anything better to do and because she felt shy all of a sudden. It didn't matter how long she knew him she would always feel like that awkward girl he met all those years ago. Shaking off a vague feeling of unease she bit her lip and looked up at him.

"This time I do Merry. Because you can not do this any other way." His voice was nervous. In his day and realm a man had to scar a women to become her husband. But as soon as he had done so to Merry, he hated it. He had studied different ways of proposal. And choose the one from her land. As long as he was her's he did not care about anything.

Chris looked at her smiling. "Now being with you I have never been this happy. Maybe I have fallen under your spell. If that is the case then." He stopped and closed his eyes for a moment. "Am sorry am just nervous. I did something a very long time ago that I still regret. And this time I want to do it right."

He knelt down on one knee in front of her, Taking the ring out of the box. "Merry Lovelace, my princess. Would you marry me?" He said as he held the ring out to her.

Her brown eyes blink quietly as he speaks to her, this statement was confusing to her. Her cheeks flushed with happiness. Her heart shaped pale face seems to light up with his words, "You know I have never bespelled you, Chris." She murmured softly as she looks into his blue eyes and smiles.

His motion to the ground has a shocked smile "Yes, Chris. I will. I love you." she says softly as she looked into his eyes her cheeks flushed with love for the ghost who took her heart and gave her joy. "You don't have to ask but I would be happy to marry you." she said with a huge smile that seemed to split her face in two as she looked a the handsome gentleman that had stolen her heart. She was uncertain how they would marry but she is happy to debate what they could do. She never thought he would ask. He seemed so caught up in the past and what had happened that she doubted he'd ever propose.

Chris placed the ring on her finger then stood, looking into her eyes. "I promise I will find a way to become sold again. And be the husband you deserve." He went to touch her face but his hand went right through her. "I would give anything to touch your skin." Chris heard a nose coming from the portals but did not give it any thought.

He always made so many promises to make her happy and he failed to understand that just being himself was enough for her. Merry wasn't a girl who needed a lot of attention. She may have looked high maintenance but that was all part of the image she projected as the commander of the Mage Division. She had a reputation to uphold but it didn't mean she needed to be spoilt. She'd be content with the basics of life and rarely worried about material things.

"You don't have to make me such promises." she said simply as she looked over his shoulder and her brow wrinkled in confusion as the portal hummed in an odd frequency, "Chris, you should step back. The portal is getting an energy surge running through it." she said urgently as she stepped past him and held her hand out to stabilize it.

"Everyone clear the area. NOW!" she said firmly as she made a shooing gesture to them and those near the portal began to disperse. It always bugged her that there were people dumb enough to think that the portal was a place to relax. Her brow furrowed with concentration as she tried to figure out the nature of the disruption. It felt as if another parallel universe trying to link up once more. Normally this was a constant but every so often if the divergence of the world was different enough it happened with a metaphysical serge that hit the gate in a wave. The trick was making sure it didn't do any damage in the process.

Chris looked in her eyes. It always frustrated him how little she thought of herself. In his eyes she was everything. But he saw her face change to worry. Then she said to step back. If something was wrong he would not leave her side.

Something was wrong, he felt as if he was being pulled toward the portal. "Merry!" He screamed as he fell to the ground. His image flickered. He stood again to balance himself. But the pulled was getting stronger. He tired to grab onto Merry but his hand went through her. "I love you Princess." He said as he could not hold on any longer. He watched as she got further away until the darkness of the portal took him.

His image exploded the second it hit the portal. Then all went back to normal. Officers ran to check if everything was working again. One ran toward Merry to tell her there was nothing left of Chris. As the other saw someone coming through the portal. A vampire who looked confused.

It took everything she had to contain the portal so that the energy didn't explode out and kill those close to it. She may have been a goddess but energies had no concept of people or what being irradiated by the gate energy might do to someone. Witches were trained in portals from a very young age. Their bodies were attuned to it. Any other creature that tried to control it would find themselves quickly torn apart in the attempt.

Hearing Chris cry out she opened her eyes and stared in horror as he was sucked through the gate. She didn't even have time to call out to him, to even let one moment of her concentration fade would risk the energy enveloping the surrounding area and melting everything in it's wake to glass.

Seeing his image explode in the portal; Merry bit her lip. The energies began to wane and only after they settled themselves did she allow herself to slump to the ground, a soft moan was all that met the officer's inquiry as she stood and waved a hand away. She needed to mourn in peace and if she didn't lay down soon she would pass out.

Chris was gone. She wasn't ready to accept that if she ever did.

A very confused Draven stumbled out of the portals. Something did not feel right he was different somehow. Before he could think he was helped up by a Brigade officer. "Are you alright? The portals had an energy surg for a moment. Thank goodness you are a vampire. Most would not have survived."

"Vampire?" He said wondering what he was talking about. He was a ghost. But then it hit him. He was feeling the touch of the Officer as he helped him up. He could feel.

"No need to play dumb with me I know of your kind. They travel through here all the time. I need to take you out of here. The order was given to clear all non personal."

"I need to." That was when he saw her. Merry on her knees her head down. He looked at her wondering if he should ran to her side. Tell her he was alive.

"That is our Commander. Like I said not everyone survived. Her boyfriend exploded in the portal."

He looked at her and it pained him to see her like this. He locked eyes with her for only a moment. He had to tell her. Just as he took a step forward it hit him. The blood lust. He could smell blood being pumped into veins. He could hear heart beats. It was deifying. Almost to the point of madness. What was worse was he could smell the energy pouring off Merry. He got scared. He wanted to rip someones throat out.

"Am out of here. Care to show me out?" He said to the young officer.

He looked at Merry one more time. Then left. Once deep in the woods. He would give into his new feelings and take the life of the officer. It was then he knew he could never return to her.
