Merfolk
The Merfolk have rarely been seen on Yalanze but that does not mean they are not there. Tied to the waves this many and varied people make their homes where few could travel. The merfolk have very deep ties to the water dragons and are fiercely protective of these usually gentle dragons. In exchange for their protection, water dragons will often ferry merfolk too and fro about their tasks, for the eight oceans are vast and traversing them long distances is difficult.
Yalanzen sailors think the merfolk are beings with fins but they are so much more than that, the waves blessed these beings with a wide range of forms. From Kelpies to Niaids, mermen to Krakens, all reside somewhere in the cities and ranges that lie beneath the waves. The sea took special care to craft its people into a wide range to best insure their survival.
The merfolk have a vast kingdom and its ruler guides them by divine right. From the royal line comes the ties to the god of water, and as such, the one who holds the trident of leadership controls the oceans. This responsibility is not taken lightly and the royal family have been trained since infancy on how to rule their kingdom effectively. The merfolk are tied to their element and cannot venture far from it.
Basic Merfolk Powers
- Elemental Control: Each mer person has some ability to manipulate water to a greater or lesser degree. They can breathe and speak in it as it is their native element.
- Telepathy: Merfolk have the ability to communicate with their own kind over long distances via telepathy. This aids them in performing their day to day tasks.
- Shapeshifting (To human and back): Many merfolk can transform to a human form to travel on land. The further away from the sea they are the harder it is to maintain their human shape.
- Dragon Riding: Merfolk have a special bond with the Water Dragons. As such they are allowed to ride them when needed with little notice.
- Gift of the Sea: Depending on a mer person's sub species he/she/it may have an ability that is unique to them. The nature of this ability can vary widely but it is tied to their form.
