History:
Annika Koshaleva was born on May 21, in the Yalanze world, in a place called Evondale. She has two parents named Matthew and Melinda Koshaleva. Before she was born, her father was a US Army soldier and because if that the family movied around a lot before settling in Long Beach. But her mother carried a secret. Melinda was a Fire Dragon. When she was four, her parents had a disagreement which ended up with her parents getting a divorce. Annika's mother, Melinda, then took her daughter and went to live further down South.
Growing up Annika was a honor student in school, but would sometimes get hurt due to a few adventures she took. When she was six years old, Annika took a interest in art and music, while at the same time, her parents tried to work it out, even though they lived in different places. Melinda thought it was best if her daughter spent some time with her grandmother. For Annika that was the fun part. Living a few months with her grandmother was fun and they got to do different things. At the age of seven, is when Annika first started to learn more about magic.
Annika's grandmother taught her about magic. But most importantly, about when and when not to use it. And about how to be very careful around strangers. But Annika's first important lesson was how to keep herself focused. She lived with her grandmother for five months while going to school. Then some good news reported that her parents got back together again.
In a way, Annika could understand her parents fighting. Even though her father was still a soldier and moved around a lot, due to that he could be called in at any moment. While her mother wanted a stable home for their daughter to go to school. Things stayed like this for years. Then one day everything changed. Shortly after Annika turn twelve, she learned her parents were going through a divorce. That's when Melinda thought she found a soul mate for herself. Her mother met a new man by the name of Rodney Wilson.
When Melinda met Rodeny she was honest with him, saying that she was going through a divorce and had one child. At the time, Rodney could understand this and accepted it. Annika was uneasy about it, but she only wanted to see her mother happy. That was when her mother, decided it was time for Annika started spending time with her father Matthew.
This wasn't easy for Annika at first. But she eventually got used to it. And she would spent half her time with her father and other half with her mother and step-father. During the summers she would spend with her father, while during the normal school terms, she would be with her mother. It took a while to get used to going back and forth between her parents. While in school she never really found a place to fit in, with the other kids there, because she used to get picked on. At first, this bothered her a little bit. But then Annika found something to pass the time. Her art drawings and paintings. It was something that she was good at and enjoyed.
So one summer while spending time with her father, Annika asked her father how could she defend herself if she got into a fight at school. Since Matthew wanted his daughter to be safe, he taught Annika a few basic moves, such as how to block if someone tried to hit her, and how to throw a punch, for Annika to protect herself. For during the summer times when Matthew was home, she would ask her father to teach her more, as she was a fast learner. Shortly after Annika turned fifteen is when she got a shock. She learned that she was going to have a younger sibling. There was just one small problem. Her mother Melinda didn't know if the child by Annika's father Matthew or Melinda's new fiancee Rodney. Annika prayed it was her father's child because for some reason, there was just something not right with her mother's new fiancee and she did not know why.
Whenever she was around Rodney, something about him gave Annika a very uneasy feeling, that she couldn't put her finger on. It was like when ever she was around Rodney, Annika always felt drained after words, like she was in a big fight. With needing someone to talk to, Annika asked if she could visit her grandmother. When visiting, Annika told her grandmother everything she was feeling. So that's when she was sent to learn basic training as a way to defend herself, without having to use magic.
With the help of her grandmother Annmarie teachings, Annika started to take things more serious. Such as, if something was wrong with Rodney, then that meant Annika had to protect her younger sibling if it was indeed her father's child. But if it was Rodney's then don't worry. When the time came for her mother to give birth, was both a happy and sad day. Happy because Annika welcomed a new baby brother to the family, and to learn he was her father's child and real slibling. Sad because her mother Melinda had hoped that the boy was Rodney's son.
Melinda named the boy Elijah Koshaleva since he was Matthew's son. For Annika was sad too, because this meant, that she had to protect her brother against her stepfather, because Rodney was so upset. After taking her grandmother's advice into count, Annika started keeping records of everything. When school break came, Annika took a summer job as a cook, as she had a feeling she might need the money, just in case her brother ever needed anything. The job closest to her was a hour away from home. Since she didn't trust to leave her brother at home, Annika would take her younger brother Elijah with her, and if anyone asked, she said that Elijah was her son, as it was the perfect excuse for having Elijah with her all the time. This allowed Annika to not only work, but to keep her brother safe at the same time. When Rodney saw her working, he thought she was out the way and started to focus more on her mother.
Over the years during school break Annika worked her job. When she graduated from school she started working as full time as a cook. For a while things were fine until she learned her father had move to somewhere in the midwest. After that, everything went down hill. Annika was planning to go stay with her grandmother for a few month during the summer, but that didn't happen. One day her mother said Annika's grandmother passed away. This really devasted her. But what puzzled her was, why did her mother act like she didn't care at all? And when Annika said she wanted to help clear things out of her grandmother's home and was told no, that she could not go, and that is when she knew there wasn't something right about all this.
The next morning, Annika left her brother Elijah at home with her mother, then went to her grandmother's house. That's when she saw everything. The house looked like it had been broken into, and things were scattered all over. For it looked like somebody was looking for something but never found what they were looking for. With gloves on from a cold day, Natsha went through everything, being careful to put things back where they were. But something just didn't feel right. What could the robber be after in the house? Then Annika remembered where her grandmother kept all her really important paperwork. Locked inside a safe hidden under the floor in her room. Annika remembered it, because her grandmother explained why she kept it there. And beside her grandmother, Annika was the only one who knew where the safe was.
Annika did what she was told. If there was a time when her grandmother Annmarie left or passed, to switch boxes with the box on her dresser so they always remembered where the safe was. She never really understood why Annmarie said that, until later on. When she realized what time it was, Annika put everything back to normal and the way she found it. Just as she was about to leave her grandmother's home, Annika got a very bad feeling, almost like she was being watched. She looked out the bedroom window only to find her stepfather standing outside. But how did Rodney know she was going to be here? Maybe he figured it out.
With being stuck, she did the only thing she could do. Annika went for help. A girl named Sharon who lived a few houses down from Annmarie. Now the only thing was trying to sneak out of her grandmother's home and she had to pray that her friend Sharon was home. Annika then raced downstairs and out the back door, she felt like she was racing against a time clock.
On her way out, Annika locked the back door and ran down the back alley. It's a good thing she only had to go four house down. Reaching her friends house, Annika learned Sharon was home, because the back door to the kitchen was unlocked. Annika knocked and waited for someone to answer, when Sharon let her in and asked what was wrong, Annika explained she needed to get home, but was hiding from her stepfather. So Sharon agreed to help. The girls waited for Annika's stepfatger to leave, before they finally left to head out. When they were five blocks away, Annika climbed in the front seat and told Sharon to drop her off at close to her home, so that Annika could walk the rest of the way, and that she didn't want her friend to get involved or hurt.
The next morning, Annika made to work on time, even though only a few minutes late, so nobody could start asking questions. When she got off of work, Annika took her time getting home. She was still upset and mourning her grandmother. But if her grandmother's death wasn't hard enough, going to her funeral was. At the service, Annika wouldn't let anyone hold her brother Elijah, not even her mother. Right then her brother was the only thing keeping her balanced and she could focus on. When they read her grandmother's will, is when everyone got a surprise.
Annika learned her grandmother Annmarie was a wealthy woman. She passed a good amount of money and her current house to her daughter Melinda. Then Annmarie passed the rest of everything to her grandchildren Annika and Elijah Koshaleva. Things that included money and real estate with two houses, that will go to Annika on her eighteenth birthday, which was only a few weeks away. Annika was surprised, Melinda was shocked and Rodney was furious, that Melinda didn't inherit more.
After that day, Annika started to notice a few of the looks her stepfather would give her. If looks could kill, Rodney would already have done so. Then one night when she came home from work, Annika overheard Rodney on the phone. The only thing she heard was a certain part of the conversation. "We need to have a meeting soon. Don't worry about the girl. I will talk to her. But the boy might be useful or could help", Rodney said. Annika didn't need to hear anymore, she understood loud and clear. While she didn't know what kind of a 'meeting' it was, she knew then her stepfather was going to try to get rid of her, and keep her younger brother Elijah.
Annika eased away from the door, so she wouldn't be heard and walked back outside. She was so quiet that nobody knew she was home. When Annika went back inside, she called out saying she was home, just like she did every night, but she knew she had to step carefully from now on. Just as Annika had started to get over her grandmother's death, is when another bad thing happened. A week later is when she came home one night, Annika noticed the state of her mother's home. It looked simliar to found she found her grandmother's house. A window broken, things scattered, and the home looked broken into. Having a sense of deja vu, Annika went in to check on her mother and found her mother on the ground dead, Melinda looked like she was in a fight or been strangled.
As much as she wanted to drop down and cry right there, Annika knew there was no time, because she had to get out of there. Seeing her mother dead made her heart break, but at the same time Annika's mind and instincts were screaming at her with a answer that she already knew. Rodney did it. Rodney killed both her grandmother Annmarie and her mother Melinda. And her stepfather was trying to go after her next. But why? What did Rodney want? What was he after? What did he have to gain from all this killing and death? She had to wondered about that.
After running out of her home Annika prayed she could get away fast enough, and that her brother would stay quiet and sleep, before Rodney came home and found them. It was just her luck that a she saw someone passing by, and asked the older couple if she could have a lift to where they were going. was coming and she hoped on, not caring which direction the bus was going at the moment. Half way there, the couple asked her if, she would be alright on her own so late at night, Annika told the that she was on her way to see her father and it was only a little further. The couple wished her good luck and left. It took Annika a hour, before sge finally reached her father'd home. When her father let bef in, he didn't say anything, judt said they would talk in the morning.
The next day, she saw all her father's family was there to greet her. Everyone from both her father and stepmother, both her aunts Crystal and Sarah, her two uncles both Tim and Derek, along with her grandmother Desiree. Annika explained everything to her father and his wife. Once Annika was done talking, she showed them the box for Annmarie's safe. It was a box with cash, a buch of paperwork and five sealed letters. Annika closed the box and zipped up her backpack.
Annika also explained that she belives Rodney killed her mother, even though she couldn't prove it just yet. While talking everything over, she showed Matthew her grandmother's safe and asked him to read the letter. It was then Annika learned everything was in there. To her shock, Annmarie left her a very lot of money in cash, some paperwork for another insurance policy, deeds to some real estate and a cafe that Annmarie owned. But what surprised Matthew was, the same business that Desiree owned, was the same place Matthew's mother Annmarie also owned too. Which meant both Annmarie and Desiree both owned the business together, but Desiree was giving her half to pass down to Annika. That once Annika turned eighteen in a few days, she would inherit everything both her grandmothers own.
But it wasn't until a few days later, that Annika learned the truth. When her grandmother talked everything over with her, by reading the last sealed letter that was addressed to her. Saying that Annmarie wanted for Desiree to take over as her mentor in magic, because Annika was going to need to further her training. The letter revealed that Annika's grandmother Annmarie and mother Melinda were both Dragon's, which made Annika half human. In. way, the letter explained a lot of questions she did not know before, but always wondered about. It alsp helped Annika understand why, she never really felt like she belonged or fit in well with her friends and like the rest of the other kids at school.
For three years, Annika learned more about her mixed heirtage and her abilities that came with them. It helped that her grandmother Desiree was a Witch, along with a good teacher and mentor. Finally once after Annika turned twenty-one, Desiree gave her a final test. It lasted five days of non stop trials puzzles, trials and tests before she finally completed it. But thankfully all of her extra training paid off and Annika passed her test. Once she qas given Desiree's approval, Annika asked her grandmother what the extra training was for. She learned to was for her to be able to get into a place called The Brigade, who they tested all new students, to see how strong they are in the abilities. Annika also learned that both her grandmothers Annmarie and Desiree were members of the Brigade as well.
After passing her final test, Annika had to wonder what the purpose of the training was for. What did this Brigade do? And also why did she have to be part of it. Sp she went through the rest of her grandmother Annmarie's things. Now that Annika cleaned everything out, is where she got a closer look at the letters. One she already read, which was about Annmarie's will and passing everything to her. The second was to Desiree, which was asking to continue Annika's training. The third letter was to her. The last two letters puzzled her a little bit, because Annika had never heard her grandmother mention them before.
In her hand, were two sealed letters addressed to a Merry and Bellator. Annika frowned at them, wondering why her grandmother Annmarie would write to them with a sealed letter. With not being sure, Annika asked Desiree about it. She learned that Merry and Bellator were both High Members inside the Brigade and it was a private matter, to make sure that Annika handed in both letters to them unopened when she reached the Brigade. So she agreed focused on the last letter that was addressed to her.
From the letter, Annika learned fully more about all of the things her grandmother told her. It was mostly about the promise Annika made, that she would learn everything she could, because one day, she would have to protect someone else and part of that, was to use her magic. Annika remembered the promise she made, because it was way before her little brother Elijah was born. Annika also learned from Annmarie, that in the Brigade, a promise is like a Oath and must always be kept. That her grandmother was part of a group who helped protect people, and knew Annika would fit in well there. But like anywhere, there would be people Annika got along well with, others she would disagree with, and some who does things only to challenge her, to see if she would break.
But one thing must be, that above all, for Annika to never break or crack in front of anyone, the moment anyone see Annika break, they will take it as a sign of weakness and try to push her out the Brigade. That it's very important that Annika also watches who she is social and talks with there, one wrong move in the Brigade and it can cause her lots of problems. That's why it waa important for Annika to have the extra training, so she could be prepared for anything or any situation that might rise.
The letter ended with, her grandmother Annmarie stating, she was sorry that she could not finish Annika's training. And that with her stepfather Rodney still on the loose and trying to come after her, that the safest place for her, would be for Annika to join the Brigade. There, she can protect both Elijah and herself, and that if she ever needed any help, for Annika to seek out one of her grandmother's people, who could give her the help if she needs it.
Once she was finally done reading her grandmother's last letter, Annika had to sit back and think things over. On one hand, she could stay with her father, but would that put him in danger? Then there was the matter of her little brother Elijah, who was only five and a half years old. If her stepfather Rodney came after Annika's father the same way he did her mother, then that means Annika was all that her brother had left for family. Or would it be better for her to just join the Brigade, like her grandmother Annmarie wanted? If Annika joined the Brigade, she could learn to help defend herself and protect Elijah better too if she chose to go.
But she now was starting to worry abouy Rodney going after her father's family. Annika knows that her stepfather would try to harm or hurt her father Matthew, just to get to Annika and her brother. So Annika asked for her grandmother's advice. Desiree thought it was best way to protect both Annika and Elijah. When they talked to her father Matthew, as much as Annika's father didn't like to admit it, Matthew thought it was the best way to protect both of his children, until Rodney was caught once and for all. Once everyone talked things over, to was decided that the next morning, Desiree would take Annika where she needed to go, help her enroll in the Brigade where she would safe.
