A Date with a ghost (merry)

Chris wanted everything to be right. Right down to the note he left at her place.

He needed some alone time with her. And getting that had been impossible as of late. He could tell she needed a break too. He stood in front of the restaurant with a rose in his hand. He hoped she would come. A small box tucked away in his pocket. It took him nearly a week to plain this date with her. He even researched earth dating.

Merry always looked good. The chances of her looking bad were rare and usually saved for sick days or just after a brutal battle. Today however; she was happily going out on a date. It felt nice to be doing something for herself for a change and it made her smile. Glancing down at the jewel tones in her dress she smiled as she approached Chris.

She glanced at the restaurant and then back at him, "What do you have planned?" she asked him shyly as she glanced at the well appointed place, "Shall we go in?" she asked as she looked at his suit with an appreciative glance. She still wondered where everything was going with Chris. He was a bit of an insufferable jerk around others but he was kind to her. Inwardly she sighed and hoped that some day he would let his guard down to others. She somehow thought that day was a long day in coming, however. Chris was unrepentant as ever and it could make life hard for her but he genuinely cared for her.

He was nervous. If he was alive he would be sweating right now.

Chris felt as if his world slowed the moment he saw Merry walking towards him. Her dress made her skin seem brighter. He wanted this moment to last. So he could pull it from his memories when ever he wished.

"You look beautiful," He said nervously. He was acting like a school boy with a crush. "This is for you." He said as he handed her the rose. "Sorry it does not compare to you." He smiled. When she asked what they had plained he just answered, "You'll see."

He took her by the hand. Letting his fingers intertwine with hers. He had made a deal with the owner. One that involves not haunting the place anymore. The hostess lead the couple to the best table in the house. It was surrounded by red lace curtains for privacy. Chris held out the chair for her to sit. After all he was a prince.

Merry smiled as she was seated and looked about her in confusion, "What is the special occassion?" she asked him as he seemed so nervous and handed her a flower.

"You don't have to be nervous, its just dinner." she said with a soft chuckle as she looked at him and patted his hand, "Now, what does this wonderful establishment offer?" she asked as she waited for menus to be brought or dinner to be laid out depending on what Chris had planned. She really was feeling spoilt and it was new to her. There had been so much worry that she never understood it all. Everyone was panicking and as far as she knew it just made things more tense. She wasn't going to let fear rule her life. She sipped a goblet of water and looked to him to provide an explanation. She was curious as to what he would say.

Chris smiled as he realized she could see right though his nervous. "It's out first real date and I wanted everything to be just right. But your right." Before he could say anything else a waitress brought out a bucket of ice with a bottle of Champaign and two long steamed glasses. And presented to pour them the drink.

"Is there anything you want to know about me? Am an open book. You know that." He wondered how he was going to get through this, since he could not eat anything. But it was all for her. And so far worth it. He watched the waitress leave and closes the curtains behind her. Leaving the young couple alone again.

[Mari]

Merry shook her head, "Surely we are past such a need to impress one another. It is your company I desire not the fanciness of the places you can bring me to." she said gently, "I want you to know its you I like." she said with a soft smile that caused her cheeks to pink.

"I just wished you felt comfortable enough to show others the person that I see. The person that is so vibrant and cares about people. You hide it when you don't have to. You are free to be yourself, Chris. Embrace it. As far as wanting to know things about you...why do you hide behind so many things?" she asked softly as she regarded him. Her eyes taking in his form and the set up that he had provided for her. So much work for a date, it confused her.

Chris felt his face light up at her words. It was the first time she told him how she felt about him. As she spoke his face dropped. She did not know what it is like to be a ghost. The way others treated him. Some times he found himself putting on the eye liner just to make people notice him. She needed to hear this.

"Merry," He looked up at her catching the light in her eyes. "By all things I am a ghost. But as you know am not like a ghost. I don't guard the gates or spend my time moody and well dead. But yet it seems that is all people see when they look at me. Like am not really there, unimportant. A spot of paint on a large wall. Even the ones that can see me will not say hi back. The way they all looked at me back at the mage training. I could see it in all of them. The look of would you please go away. So I had to act this way. Why should I be nice to those who wish I wasn't there." He pulled his voice back to keep from yelling at her. Something he never wanted to do. "You are the only one that treats me like am alive when we are together." He paused and looked down again. "Why didn't you tell the others that we are dating? When I told dragon boy about us, he passed it off. And you did not say anything more about it. Are we? I know I don't make it easy for you either. I know it must be hard being with a ghost. I can not even eat anything. Or touch you without spending a week at the portals. A week of boredom just to touch you." He held out his hand and lightly touches her cheek. "I wish you knew how much I love you."

Merry had not realized that Chris had felt so strongly but at the same time she couldn't condone him pitching a fit, "A self fullfilling phrophecy, Chris. You act like a jerk you get treated like one. You died and you have yet to accept that fact. You're still trying to get people to do things your way. Well news flash, they aren't because you're time is done and they don't have to listen to you. By all rights you should have resolved your issues and moved on by now."

She was mad, "What do you expect me to do? I don't even know if you have all your issues resolved. Ghosts can't get married, Chris. They can't have children or ever grow old and honestly I'm still trying to deal with that. You act all upset that I'm not acknowledging you and your issues but you don't seem to give a crap about the fact that you still have to resolve your issues and eventually move on. I can't and won't hold you back. I'm not that selfish. I'm sorry if that means I don't parade you around my friends but honestly do you think it would be any easier to marry you and then have you dissappear on me because you go yourself figured out? I grew up Chris and you haven't. You are still the same person you were before you died. You need to grow and adapt and figure out why you are here."

Merry got up and there was no soothing her, "You love what you think I am but you don't know what I am at all, Chris. You don't know about anything that happened to me or what I am. I'm not human, I'm not even a witch and until you figure out what I am you can't hold me to some Yalanzen concept of marriage or love or even relationship because I am not human in any sense of the world I DIED ten years ago, Chris and I became something that no one understands. I'm a freak and something everyone wants a piece of so forgive me if I don't want to listen to you tell me about how much I'm yours."

It was rare for Merry to get in a snit but she was well and truely in one. She turned and walked away. Hitting the door and walking out of it. If he chose to follow he would find no trace of her save the hint of her perfume.

Chris sat at the table in shock as he watched her walk away. The problem was he could not remember his life. When he was alive. He tried but only emptiness filled him. He had no reason to move on. What did he have to resolve if he had no life. She was his life. And maybe she was right. He was a jerk. And did take pleasure in messing with people. Only cause he could. He did not deserve her. She needed someone to grow old with.

He did not care if she was human or not. But he could tell that something had changed in her. Maybe it was when the demon took some of her. But that did not matter. He needed to only look inward for the reason she walked away.

He pulled the small box out of his pocket and placed it on the table. Inside was a key hanging from some black lace to form a necklace. It was the key to the only thing he called home. A small space in the walls of the portals. He was going to take her there. He was going to show her his true self. And if he ever went missing to look for him there.

It was time to let her go. But he could not. That burning feeling in his stomach would not let him. He had to do one more thing then he would step back and leave her alone. He closed his eyes and when he opened them he was back to her house. He placed the key on her pillow. Then disappeared.

Merry was angry. The air hummed with it. She walked alone in the rain letting it beat down on her, uncaring as she wrapped herself in her cloak and shivered. She found a spot far away and sat down to think. She didn't know what Chris expected of her. It wasn't like she could have a normal life in any way. She wanted him to understand this. She somehow doubted he would understand. She exhaled slowly and tried to calm down with her feelings.

She knew it was bad to lose control and especially for her. Her emotions fueled her magic. She had to focus and not lose who she was in the midst of everything. It was easy to do. She was afraid to lose herself in everything. She knew she was supposed to keep who she was. If she was meant to be mindless she never would have survived Sed's stealing of her magics. She closed her eyes and sighed as she tried to center herself.

So she was a familiar. She wasn't sure what the hell that meant anyway. She knew she kept have dreams about this guy. And that his name was Jonah. Great a hunk playboy who thinks he is a gift to women, she guesses.

The rain was coming down but she did not care. Ooh water. She had a small clear umbrella in hand and her black boats made perfect rain boats as she walked down the street. She hoped the meds she took for her pain would kick in. Her grandmother said that she would feel strange not being with her mage. Great, If she didn't want stomach pains she had to be stuck with Casanova. So there she was taking a walk in the rain trying to make it stop.

She spots a women who seamed to busy sadened by something to worry about the rain. She could see she was upset. By her look it had to be over a guy. Men are pigs.

"Hey." She said standing over her. "Hey, Just to let you know it's raining."

Merry looked up at the dark haired woman in goth gear, "Yeah, its okay. I don't mind the rain." she said with a shrug. She didn't need to worry about it overly much. She was really too depressed to care anyway.

"I'll be okay. Its just stupid stuff." she sniffed and looked up at the other woman with a watery smile, "My name is Merry, though you wouldn't know it by how I'm acting now." she said gently as she looked at the other woman and sighed at herself.

"Yea am the one that usually makes the sarcastic jokes. LeeAnn. And let me guess it has to be over a guy, right?" She asked. Men were always the reason women get stressed out. And she was about to be stuck with one, great.

She did not care if she was butting in on other people's business that was just her. But she could tell that Merry needed someone to talk to.

Chris kept hearing Merry's voice in his head. "Because you're time is done and they don't have to listen to you. By all rights you should have resolved your issues and moved on by now."

What issues? He had none. He could not even remembered how he died. He wasn't always a jerk. Mouths of being treated as nothing made him that way. Move on to what? That hurt the most. She was the only one that did not treat him like a ghost and here she was telling him to move on. Strip away the lack of flesh and bone and he was still a man. One that is in love with her. She had too many questions. Questions he could not give answers to. Cause he did not know them himself.

He knew she was under a lot of stress from her job. She held together the portals. And with that carried a target on her forehead. Funny, she's the broken one yet he knows his the one that needs saving.

He looked upon the black iron gates. Was he meant to be here?He watched the other ghost who guarded the gates. They did not seem alive. See-through with nothing but sadness on their faces. Some faded in the air and others stood without purpose. This was were he belonged. Tears fells as his hope, gone.

"Fine am I ghost. Alright take me." He screamed dropping to his knees.

Am I a ghost? Fine, take me.

Her ears perked as she sat lazily in a throne made of skulls. Yet another soul seeking some sort of answers or perhaps one letting go of the search. She could not tell which from where she was. Deciding that it was perhaps worth her time to rise, the Queen of Nightmares rose from her throne and summoned the shroud of death about her. A sort of black mist swirled about her form as she vanished from where she stood. Another soul for the collection, that was what she was always after.

Appearing before the man who surrendered himself, her dark cloaked form hovered before him menacingly. Glowing green eyes peered from within the perpetual darkness of her cowl that shielded her face from view. Around her a black cloak made of dark smoke seemed to move to and fro as if it had a life of it's own - or perhaps it was made from the lives of others. There was a long pause - a disturbingly unnatural silence that fell between the two of them as she watched the ghost weep.

"Why is it that you weep spirit? Is this not what you want? To be taken to the next world?" she asked, her voice echoing with a second tone speaking in time with hers to form an echo. Normally she would have fed upon the soul greedily and left but this one seemed like he had more to do. While that didn't matter either usually, this one was also connected to the woman who summoned portals. She knew of Merry but only because she was also linked to the woman who summoned portals in a way.

"Dry your eyes, if you truly wish for it, you can come home." she said soothingly, holding out her hand. She was here to offer guidance to a lost soul. Should he decline to take her hand and be taken to the next world, she would then offer him something far more valuable than rest; a second chance at being human. What ghost could turn down the chance to be corporeal, even if it came with a hefty price or a time limit?
