Summer Rain (Bellator)

There were days that even Merry needed to get out and about. She still needed to eat and buy clothes as much as Bellator would wish she would stay indoors. It didn't help that Merry preferred to pick her own food and clothing and that she was not one to hire people to shop for her. "Bellator, I needed to get out of the training hall. I was going to go stirr crazy there. I needed to get out, do some shopping, run in the field and feel the wind in my hair. Haven't you ever just wanted to go someplace you've never been?" she called over her shoulder as she looked over some fruit and decided it would do for the next week. She paid coin to have it dropped by her home later and looked at her friend from under the drab cloak she wore for "protection" Tell me why I must dress so boringly. I love color it makes me happy." she said as she looked up at him with a sigh.

It started to rain and she looked up at the sky. It was a welcome break from the summer and unlike many who ducked under awnings and went into pubs Merry beamed up at the sky and brushed her cloak back so she could feel the rain on her face. Laughing happily, she felt the rain soak her curls and looked over at Bellator before throwing her arms wide and doing a graceful spin, "Isn't it wonderful? It feels so nice!" she said happily as she laughed and tossed her head back.

At the rate she was going she'd be soaked to the skin and totally not caring. "Look there. Flowers. Oh I need those for my garden. Come!" Merry went off ahead of him to see the wears that the stall had for sale.

"Someplace I have never been? Hardly a place like that now. But there was a time when I did go places I did not know of, especially if I wasn't suppose to, and it was always met with trouble. Trouble I will not let befall upon you so easily as you seem to welcome it so." Bellators eyes were everywhere. Each person they passed, each building, each alley and corner and shadow. Bellator was in his full clad armor. Many representations of dragons could be found throughout the armor he wore but it was heavy and strong forged with the strongest metals with fires breath and his own magic. His long sword at his side equally impressive as his armor. Large and strong Bellator could still wield it with one hand swiftly. Bellator was a largely built man as it was. In his armor he appeared to be even more massive. Bellators eyes scanned as he answered Merry's questions. "You look well enough to go shopping. And boring is good, few people waste their time trying to kill boring people. It is the ones that stand out that get picked off first. Better they stare at me than you." Though most people did stare at Bellator as it was hard not to miss a man of his stature. Most diverted their eyes as soon as his gaze met their own. He was intimidating and militaristic and most people avoided him if they could. He was akin to fighting and upholding order but he wasn't socially skilled. He could be tactful when required but otherwise he was blunt and enforcing and casual conversation with strangers usually turned into interrogations our of habit.

It began to rain and Merry seemed to be enjoying herself even more because of it. He was happy, the rain cleared most people out of the streets and away. Merry commented on how great it was. Bellator could only coldy reply analytically "It had not rained in some time, it was only natural, it will help with crops and cool the air." Merry spotted some plants she seemed to like. She ran off ahead. Bellator grumbled at her insistancy to move ahead of him. Bellator followed quickly clanking in his armor as he went. When they arrive he inspected the site carefully even looking through some of the plants. The owner didn't dare say anything. When Bellator was content it was safe he moved back by Merry. "I was thinking. I have never been good with politics or old men sitting in chairs making decisions. But perhaps we could bring some matters up that would help secure the Brigade from events like the one you experienced with that demon among other things. If it came from all the commanders perhaps there could be changes. This act of neutrality is growing more and more difficult to maintain. The yalazians have never been happy with the portals from the start and I fear recent events have gave them ammunition to protest that the Brigade isn't fit to hold them any longer."

Bellator looked at Merry concerningly. "And what of mages and witches outside of the brigade. It is easy for you to over see the ones here and they are sworn to obey you and the rules here. But during my hunt for the demon that attacked you I encountered many evil witches and black magic and even some that have given themselves willingly to the influence of demon spirits to increase their power. Would it be wrong of us to start binding the magic of those who do not join the brigade to prevent such problems? And there are rumors that the vampires wield a new great power among them. I guess there will soon be a greater force ruling them than the already troublesome King I have had to deal with. How can we be sure of their intentions, they are a vile race, and no one would shed a tear if they were wiped out once and for all. They have only brought terror and war, even their very lands are dead and withered. I wouldn't be surprised if they were working for demons. The ones that killed my father were assisted by demonic powers and he was around the same age as I am now when it happened. Order is breaking down all around us and we are told to stay neutral. Its hard to do when these people don't stay neutral towards us. We have unpredictable dragons, vampire and werewolves waring, demons slipping through portals, and god knows what else is to come through those portals that we havent even seen yet. There could be something worse. As the charge of the portals and Mage commander, you are always in danger, what if next time you open a portal something comes through you didn't expect and I am not there to defend you?"

Merry was undetoured by Bellator's solemn mindset, "Between you, Chris and the guards how can I possibly get in trouble?" she said as she looked at the rain soaked plants and studied them. Passing a few off to Brigade runners to bring back to her home. "I am protected more than any other person I know, Bellator."

"Well you are handsome so its understandable people look to you. You are a man of status and stature and people respect that if not fear it sometimes." she nodded. She looked down at her drab clothing and sighed. "I suppose I see your point about the clothing but it doesn't seem fair that I have to hide away." she exhaled softly and brushed a damp curl out of her eyes.

As she looked at the plants a happy look crossed her face, as Bellator spoke she tilted her head his way gently to listen, one delicate ear turned towards him to hear what he had to say. After she was done glancing about she moved away from the stall to afford them a measure of privacy to speak. "We can certainly bring up security concerns and see about fixing the breaches in security as we find them but some races do not understand our ways, Bellator. Dragons are as different as the elements they embody. We have to keep in mind their cultures so we do not disrespect them, Bellator. After all we have had recruits from all of the races and that permeability has allowed our numbers to grow and flourish." she said quietly as she looked at him from her spot as the rain fell. "And the Yalanzen's can't whield the gates or shut them down, Bellator. The gates would rebel and probably lash out with power and cook those who tried to use the gates for their own purpose. It nearly killed Sedaiyus and he had some skill. A regular human can't even stray too close to the gate for long without fear of being sucked in."

"There will always be evil Bellator. As much as we may wish for it to be otherwise there will always be a balance. Something tells me the coming months will change things beyond what we now know. Binding other beings powers is not something I or any other mage knows how to do with certainty. If a witch goes against what the planet has in mind for her eventually the planet kills her. Those that do irreparable harm are sundered by the very energies they try to wield by nature herself.

To the mention of vampires she blanched but stood firm, "The Vampires are having their own internal issues. Leave it to them, Bellator. Oliver Smith grows older with each passing year and he has no grandchild to inherit. His daughter is kindhearted and good. We do not necessarily have to break our neutrality so much as wait the Yalanzen's out. If nothing else maybe their vampire allies will eat them if they get hungry." she said simply as she looked at him, "Come. Let us go home. You look as if you could use a drink and my house is dry."

"As for opening the portals without you present, I would not do that, Bellator. You know I am smarter than that." she said with a shake of her head as she looked at him and sighed. "Let us go home. I weary of this place." she said as she waited for him to walk ahead. Feeling the weight of her position over everything.
