Yalanzens
You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty." - Mahatma Gandhi
The Yalanzens are humans that traveled in spaceships with FTL drives over a thousand years ago. Their cultures spanned the earthen globe as each continent sent out intrepid explorers to find a new world they could call their own. Many of these brave souls wished for simpler times away from the technologies that they felt had ruined the planet so when, after about five generations, they finally reached a planet they could call their own, they took to the notion of a simpler life with a tenacity that has shocked other races.
The Yalanzen's live in a pre-industrialized world by choice. They eschew most modern technology as being too complex and seeing it as decadent. This is not to say they are without their own skills, their doctors and nurses are quite adept at treating ailments with the resources that the planet provides. They aren't barbarians after all. The only time technology is useful in their eyes is with modern medicine . Indeed it was how they kept their own numbers up early on. Banks of sperm and egg cells guarantee that they are not going to die off any time soon.
Most Yalanzen's long for a world that is more in tune with the rest of the races on the planet at one point or another in their lives, and so many decide to go on journeys to see what the world has in store for them at least once in their lives. Typically these journeys are taken from 16 to 21 but many decide to go on a second journey during their middle years in order to reclaim the days of their youth. This is not looked at strangely, after all there are as many different temperaments with Yalanzens as their are stars in the sky. Their culture is as varied as the ships that brought them. Often, they can still be found in the villages of their ancestors doing the same things that their parents did.
Many Yalanzens have a distrust of other races. This Xenophobia has made their lives hard in many cases because they refuse to admit that they are the primogenitors of the Gifted, Vampires, Werewolves and Witches. In their mind, these are completely different races and they have nothing in common with any of them. The fact that they can interbreed with many of them is a fluke of genetics and does not mean THEY are responsible for other beings.
A Yalanzen's life can be quite content, provided they do not have their views challenged or they do not step outside their prescribed place in the grand order of things. This means that everyone does their part. Those that are indolent or incompetent are frowned on. Many of those who did not fit in with the Yalanzen's strict work ethics find their way to the Brigade because its laws are less strict in who a person associates with and what they do. Make no mistake however, the Brigade is not an easy out for a Yalanzen. The world is too harsh for pampered princesses and even their council members know what it is to farm the land or tend to their fields.
