Founded in the Yalanzen year of 1525 CE, the Brigade has been around for a very long time. As a result, they have pretty much seen it all. They have had the time to form their own training centers and homes away from any one city or realm and this affords them the ability to be nuetral.
When first joining the Brigade a being starts out as a recruit. He/She/It is questioned at length by the Brigade Captains to determine their mindset, aptitudes, skill sets and personality. There are no judgements here. Typically the questioners don't care what a beings value set is as much as will they keep to their word and their value set. A mercenary's oath is his bond and to break it is to risk dishonor, and death. The Brigade will most certainly throw a being out on the street if they lie to a client or cheat them in some way.
Another item of note is that all contracts are kept track of. Mercenaries will not be set against each other so it is literally a case of first come first served with some missions. The Brigade won't play both sides of a fight simultaneously they will just tell the prospective client that they have no one who can take the mission.
Brigade members have a loyalty to one another. If they learn a member is being abused or targeted by a client all members of the Brigade will come to the aid of the member. It is their duty to one another that makes them such a proficient fighting force.
Training of course is a part of any recruits day in the Brigade. Wether its learning swordwork or magical skills, recruits are expected to practice diligently when not on missions for a client. The Brigade is known for only sending the best, so to do less than that means you go hungry. For all this, the brigade does take care of its own. Injured members get treated in the Hospital free of charge as part of their dues that they pay every year. If a member is too injured to work they are offered a teaching position or one suited to their nature within the organization so that they can still contribute and have a roof over their head.
Working for the Brigade is had work but many find it satisfying for all that. Their spaces have some of the best teachers on the planet and many wish they could send their children there to learn, but the Brigade is firm in their desire to keep to themselves and maintain their neutrality. They will not jeopardize that for a few extra coin from one race or another.
Within the Brigade there is one rule. No Fighting. You may not like that Evil Wizard that is drinking at the bar, but if he wears a brigade patch like you, you had best respect him and not get in a fight. Members do not have to like one another, but respect is not up for debate. Neither is stealing. The Quartermaster will hunt you down if he notices that his weapons and gear are missing and unaccounted for.
It is also not a good idea to terrorize a town or city unless paid to do so. A member of the Brigade represents them at all times and so to act in a foolish manner is to bring dishonor to your brothers and sisters and infractions are dealt with severely.
Those fresh from the portal are given a year of missions and training in order to make up for the expense of finding their portal home. Trips are performed every six months so as to make sure that people are able to cross through regardless of weather. Be aware that the mages may not have the ability to find your world exactly. You may find yourself in an alternate universe or reality from the one you came from. Leave at your own risk.
